This book – again from the 2014 INKYs longlist is about 16yo “Boy”. It is funny, romantic, and a little off beat. Boy is the hacker son of Frankenstein and he meets the granddaughter of Jekyll and Hyde and they go on a roadtrip. Now Boy is away from home, he is meeting real people and other monsters in a very funny drive across America filled with lots of escapades. These Broken Stars is the first in the Starbound Trilogy : Three worlds. Lilac and Tarver are both on a spaceship – the Icarus – when it crashes into a nearby planet. They appear to be the only survivors. Luckily Tarver is a soldier and has survival training. They must work together to survive, but can they.
This fantasy novel – possibly the start of a trilogy – is a good read. The story is set in the Kingdom of Goredd. Dragons and humans live in an uneasy peace together with the dragons taking on the form of humans while in Goredd. Many of the characters in the novel hide secrets, and tensions are building. Seraphina is a talented musician in the royal court with her own secrets. She investigates a murder trying to find out who is behind the killing – a dragon or a human. Great book from the INKYs list for 2014. LD
I could not put this book down. A great read. Both characters – Mia and Zac – are believable and you feel for each. Both have a serious illness, and both are very young. Hospital is not much fun at any time, and if there are no other young people there it is even more isolating. Everything is changing, including your place in the family. As the Inky’s site says “You need courage to be in hospital; different courage to be back in the real world. In one of these worlds Zac needs Mia. And in the other Mia needs Zac. Or maybe they both need each other, . . . always.” http://insideadog.com.au/
